Sherry tannic suede leather, oranges, tangerine, raisin, fruitcake, mulling spices, Thick molasses, slightly spicy cinnamon and nutmeg, raisin,  tobacco leaf, cigar boxes, dark chocolate,  nutty pecan, maple syrup, Long, sweet & spicy, drying, dried fruits, A real sherry monster of a dram, I enjoyed this one more than the silky subtleness of the Macallan-Glenlivet 25 Years Old 1989 ~ 51.4% (Wm Cadenhead) . 79/100 – Malt Maniacs (average from 4 reviewers). Two versions of the 10yo get in the mid eighties but one unfortunately only crawls in with 63/100. It’s the only distillery on Mull, and it makes two distinct malt whiskies, with an equal amount of their output going towards each expression. A curiosity at Tobermory comes in the washback room, where their long fermentation takes place. A significant milestone has been hit at this point though, as I’ve now ticked off every distillery on the Islands and Western Highlands which both have visitor centres and are currently bottling whisky under their own label. 5th September. The rating for the Tobermory 10yo hasn’t changed from 2013 to 2014 in the Whisky Bible, remaining at an excellent 85/100 which is “very good to excellent whisky definitely worth buying”. (Which puts it essentially in the same bracket as every programme. I do love the Ledaig 1996, but for my money the sherry sits on the peat a fraction heavily, creating a stunning smoky sherried expression which somehow feels a touch less ‘Ledaig-y’ than the 18. I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed what I tasted, particularly the Ledaig. The bay is one of the safest anchorages in the Hebrides, indeed the original name for the area was Ledaig (pronounced Led-chig) from the Gaelic, meaning 'safe haven'. A bad idea, as it turned out when I got to my feet and discovered my nose to be bleeding like a tap.
